Your link
Your tagged link
UTM tags are read automatically by Google Analytics and most email tools. Nothing is stored - this all runs in your browser.
What a UTM link actually does
A UTM link is a normal web address with a few extra tags on the end. Those tags tell your analytics exactly where a visitor came from - which email, which post, which ad. Without them, most of your traffic just shows up as "direct" or "referral" and you are left guessing what is working.
Say you share the same offer in a newsletter, a LinkedIn post and a Facebook ad. Tag each link differently and your analytics will show you which one actually drove the sign-ups, so you can spend more time on what works and drop what does not.
The five UTM parameters
- Source - where the link lives: google, facebook, newsletter.
- Medium - the type of channel: email, cpc (paid ads), social, referral.
- Campaign - the specific promotion: july-offer, spring-sale.
- Term - optional, the paid keyword you are bidding on.
- Content - optional, used to tell two links in the same campaign apart (e.g. the header button vs the footer link).
Keep them lowercase and consistent. Facebook and facebook are counted as two different sources, which quietly splits your data in half.
Track the leads, not just the clicks
Tagged links tell you where traffic comes from. The next question is what it costs you and what it is worth. Work out your cost per lead and conversion rate per channel, and you can see which campaigns actually pay for themselves.
If you are running enough campaigns that tagging and reporting is becoming its own job, that is exactly the kind of thing worth automating. Workvolve builds reporting automations for Australian businesses that pull your campaign data together on their own, so you get one clear view instead of five dashboards.
